German children inspire architects using NCS

Building Blocks is an imaginative exhibition involving children in construction and urban planning processes. Together with architects from Berlin in Germany, the local children inspire new thinking in architecture and design the buildings of their dreams.

In Building Blocks, the local children and youngsters from Berlin work together with architects to challenge our fixed ideas about architecture and construction. The children are between the ages of 6 and 16 and attend various schools in Berlin. They work in groups, with five selected architecture firms, share their wishes and visions with the architects and design models of their "dream houses". These models are then presented in large-scale, enterable format in the Nordic embassies' exhibition space in Berlin. The exhibition is accompanied by guided tours, workshops on architecture and urban planning for children and adults, as well as a conference for professionals.

NCS Colour is happy to have collaborated with the architects to bring forth the colour design for this exhibition. The architects have used NCS Products, such as NCS Album, as useful tools in the development of the children's imaginative creations. As a colour system and language, NCS has been used from idea to reality throughout the colour design process, starting with the architects' initial designs of the houses to the final painting of the installations at the exhibition.

The concept for Building Blocks was inspired by norms and expectations that is governing architecture today. The purpose of the exhibition is to investigate the relationship between architect and client. The concept was created by Färgfabriken, a Swedish foundation with a wide range of exhibitions and activities in art, architecture and urban development, together with the Swedish design studio Medium. The background of the project is a part of the architectural debate in Sweden with the aim of creating creative architecture and an exhibition that appeals to both children and adults. It has already been realised with great success in Stockholm in 2010 and Oslo in 2011.

The exhibition opens on the 9th of September 2012 and will take place at the Felleshus in Berlin, in cooperation with the Swedish embassy. The Felleshus is a cultural/exhibition centre and cinema/presentation space shared by the five Nordic embassies.
